USY Lingo

This is one of my favorite images
USY: stands for United Synagogue Youth, a conservative Jewish youth group affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.

TZAFON: literally means "north" in Hebrew.

RUACH: a Hebrew word for spirit. In usy, it is often linked with a lot of singing and pride.

SHUL: another word for "Temple" or "Synagogue"

SATO: Social Action-Tikun Olam, USY'ers social action and awareness organization that partakes in helping the needed, volunteering time at a nursing home or at numerous other places. It can be as simple as donating one can of food to getting stores do donate thousands of pairs of shoes. see below for TO

TO: Tikun Olam, healing the world. It is incorporated into SATO and is USY's non-profitable fund.

INTERCITY: A convention planned and organized by a USY chapter in the region. It is sponsored by that SHUL and takes place there. Usually, we have a Fall and then a Spring Intercity

REGIONAL EVENT: a convention organized and planned by the USY Regional Board and Office. The hosting chapter helps out with planning and organizing, but it is mainly "regional"

REGIONAL KINNUS: the convention held in late May at Camp Chipinaw in Swan Lake, NY. The 4 day convention includes shabbat, regional elections, a dance, a banquet, and loads of fun!

NMI: New Members Insitute, usually in October for new members and freshman. In addition, the Regional Board and certain chapter board members are there.

LTI: a leadership convention. The first Tzafon LTI was held this year!
